Cameron Howard "Sonny" Wright, Jr.

June 13, 1960 — July 1, 2025

Oxford, MS

Cameron Howard “Sonny” Wright, Jr., age 65, of Oxford, MS, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, in Coffeeville, MS. Sonny, as most people knew him, was born on June 13, 1960, in Okolona, MS. Sonny’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was married to the love of his life, Rhonda, for nearly 44 years. He took immense pride in his 2 children and cherished every moment spent with his five grandchildren. Whether it was teaching them how to bait a hook, cheering them on at their ballgames or gymnastics meet, Sonny was always present. He graduated from Eupora High School in Eupora, MS. He attended Delta State University, then transferred to Mississippi Delta Junior College, where he played first base on the baseball team. He received his Bachelor of Physical Education degree from Mississippi College, and then his Master of Education Administration degree from Delta State University. Sonny began his coaching and teaching career at False River Academy in False River, LA, and also at Parkview Baptist School in Baton Rouge, LA. Returning to MS, Sonny continued his career at Maben High School, Greenville Christian Academy, and Kirk Academy in Grenada, where he began his career in administration. After serving as the High School Principal at Kirk, he became the Headmaster at Rossville Christian Academy in Rossville, TN. Sonny also served as Headmaster at Carroll Academy in Carrollton, MS, Calhoun Academy in Calhoun City, MS, and Winona Christian School in Winona, MS, where he retired after 34 years in education. Known for his warm heart, Sonny dedicated his life to shaping young minds and guiding them both on and off the field or court. Over the course of his career as a coach and administrator, he left a lasting legacy in the lives of countless students, colleagues, and friends who were fortunate to benefit from his wisdom and example. Sonny was also a lifelong sports enthusiast, an outdoorsman, and an avid Mississippi States Bulldogs fan—win or lose, he bled maroon and white. He passed down that Bulldog spirit to his children and grandchildren, along with a few spirited game-day traditions that will be fondly remembered. Sonny loved the outdoors. He felt closest to God in the quiet moments he spent in the woods. His faith in God was the foundation of his life. His competitive spirit was not limited to the ballfields. He enjoyed countless hours playing games, especially cards, around the kitchen table with family and friends—nearly always winning. He was preceded in death by his father, Cameron Howard Wright, Sr.; stepfather, John David Oswald; and sister, Sharon Rose Wright. He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Kay Robbins Wright of Oxford, MS; son, Nathan Cameron Wright of Greenwood, MS; daughter, Tabitha Renee (Wess) Denton of Oxford, MS; five grandchildren, Marley Kay Wright, Wylie John Princeton Wright, Audy Michael Cameron Wright, Scotlyn Rose Denton, and Charlotte McKay Denton; his mother, Johnnie Louise Gilliam Wright Oswald of Eupora, MS; sister Teresa (Dale) Lloyd of Batesville, MS; stepsister, Brenda Oswald (David) Valenzuela of Oxnard, CA; and a host of nieces and nephews. Sonny was dedicated to his work, loved people deeply, and never met a stranger. Sonny’s legacy is not only in the titles he held or the games he coached—it lives on in the lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the loved he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 PM on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Calhoun Academy Gymnasium in Calhoun City, MS. Visitation will be before the service, from 2:30 PM until 4:30 PM, in the Gymnasium. Interment will follow at 6:30 PM at Clarkson Cemetery in Webster County, MS. Rev.
