Robert Lee Box, age 69, of Houston, Mississippi, passed away at his residence on Wednesday morning, September 9, 2026. Robert was born on April 26, 1957, in Maben, Mississippi, to the late Melvin Robert Box and Naomi Thalia Louise Edwards Box.
Robert was very gifted and talented musician. Music was woven into the very fabric of Robert’s life. From an early age, Robert showed an extraordinary God-given musical talent and could seemingly play anything with strings. He first learned to play under the guidance of his father and, by the age of 12, was already performing with a band. What began as a young boy’s love for music would grow into a remarkable musical career that carried Robert from Mississippi to stages around the world. At just 17 years old, Robert was given an opportunity most musicians could only dream of when the legendary Bill Monroe, known as the “Father of Bluegrass,” signed him to play. Robert’s musical journey would go on to include performances with some of the most recognized names in country, bluegrass and gospel music, including Dolly Parton, Jim & Jesse McReynolds, the Hemphill Brothers, and renowned saxophonist John Henry “Ace” Cannon. Robert also had the opportunity to play with Reba McEntire and was later offered a job as a member of her band, an opportunity he was unable to accept at the time.
Robert’s talent took him far beyond his Mississippi home. He performed throughout the United States and around the world, including performances in Japan and at Wembley Stadium in England, and had the extraordinary honor of performing for Queen Elizabeth II. Throughout his career, Robert earned numerous honors, including being named Mississippi Banjo Champion five consecutive years and receiving recognition as International Southern Gospel Instrumentalist of the Year. He also recorded and published numerous bluegrass and instrumental records, leaving behind a musical legacy that his family will treasure for generations.
Even after his years of extensive traveling, Robert never stopped making music. He continued performing with numerous bands across the country, but some of his favorite moments required no stage at all. Robert loved nothing more than sitting down with family and friends for a jam session—anytime, anywhere. If there were instruments nearby, there was a good chance music would soon follow.
Robert’s talents extended well beyond music. He was an accomplished carpenter whose beautiful woodworking reflected the same patience, skill and creativity that could be heard when he picked up an instrument. In his free time, Robert loved the outdoors, especially deer and turkey hunting, but fishing held a particularly special place in his heart.
Robert also had a deep love and respect for veterans and was always willing to give his time and his musical gifts to them. Playing at the VA was never simply another performance to Robert; it was his way of honoring men and women for whom he cared deeply.
For all the stages Robert stood upon and all the places music carried him, his greatest love was his family. He treasured life with the love of his life, his wife, Jan. Robert wanted Jan by his side and especially loved the trips and adventures they shared together. Robert loved his son, Lee, and his daughter, Heather, beyond measure. He was immensely proud of Lee and his military career, and he cherished singing with Heather, whether they were together at church or performing. Those moments of sharing the music he loved with his daughter became some of life’s most precious memories.
Robert’s grandchildren, Katelee, Ian, Alana, and Cruz, brought him tremendous joy. He was incredibly proud of each of them and, with his unmistakable sense of humor, was known to say they were the prettiest kids around—and, of course, that they got all their good looks from him.
Robert’s life was filled with extraordinary experiences, but the measure of the man was much greater than the stages he played, the awards he received, or the people with whom he performed. Robert had a big heart and loved his family, his friends and his music deeply. He leaves behind not only an extraordinary musical legacy, but a lifetime of stories, laughter, songs, and memories that will continue to be shared by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
Robert went peacefully to be with God, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly. And if we had to guess, Robert has probably already found a few musicians and formed a band in Heaven. Though his music may be quiet here for now, we find comfort in believing that one day, we will hear Robert play again.
Robert is survived by his loving wife and partner in life, Jan Box of Houston, Mississippi; one daughter, Heather (Christopher) Holcomb of Flora, Mississippi; one son, Melvin Lee (April) Box of Mathiston, Mississippi; four grandchildren, Katelee (Jase) Grantham, Ian Box, Alana Childress and Cruz Childress; one sister, Thalia Neal of Brandon, Mississippi and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Those who preceded Robert in death were his parents, Melvin Robert and Naomi Thalia Louise Edwards Box; one sister, Fran Mendoza and two brothers, Anthony and Thurman Box.
